Bilkis Bano was an Indian woman from Gujarat who was the victim of being gang-raped by Hindu terrorists in the 2002 Gujarat Riot. She was five months pregnant at the time. Additionally, 14 of her relatives were murdered, including her three-year-old girl child. She pleaded for an exceptional indemnity, despite refusing the Gujarat government’s offer of Rs 5 lakh.
In 2004, the Supreme court transferred the instance to CBI. In 2008 a special court sentenced life sentence to 11 perpetrators of murder and rape. In the High Court in 2017 found 5 police officers guilty and two doctors suspected of being supportive of violators as well as for defying evidence.
In April, the Supreme Court ordered the block of pensions of the four retired police officers and to de-promote the fifth policeman (IPS) who failed to conduct an adequate investigation into the case. The Supreme court also directed the Gujarat Government to provide 50 lakh compensation in addition to an official job for Bilkis.
In the end, all 11 men arrested in Gang rape cases were released on the 15th of August, 2022 (Monday) from Godhra Jail. The Gujarat government permitted their release under the Remission Policy.
