Saikhom Mirabai Chanu, a Meitei woman, was born in Nongpok Kakching (about 30 km from Imphal city in the state Manipur[5]. Chanu stated that she worships Sanamahism as well as Hindu deities even though she is a devotee. When she was twelve years old, her siblings and parents saw her strength. Her older brother struggled to pick up the firewood bundle she brought home.

Mirabai studied athletics at Manipur Sports Academy. She traveled by hitchhiking alongside truck drivers transporting sand. She invited truck drivers to show their appreciation after her Olympic competition. She stroked their feet in a gesture to show her respect.
